Gremi d’Arids de Catalunya (Aggregates Association of Catalonia) is made up of 147 member companies and over 380 extractive activities, representing as a whole roughly 98% of total production in Catalonia, or 65 million metric tons of product annually. The membership includes the majority of the largest aggregates producers, who creates 1.600 direct jobs. If we count direct and indirect jobs, the aggregates sector creates 10.800 jobs, which means a 4,9% of the Catalan Industry.
Brief history
The Aggregates Association of Catalonia was created in the thirties, during the Second Republic, and at the time was known as the ‘Gremio Sindical de Piedras y Tierras’ (Stone and Earth Syndicate). During those early years, it included not only aggregate extraction and sales businesses, but mineral mills and stone artisans (construction, pavements, flagstones, etc.) too. It was not until 1966 that the Aggregates Association broke away from the ‘Gremio Sindical de Tierras y Piedras’ to form the ‘Gremio Sindical y Provincial de Áridos de Barcelona’, (Provincial Aggregates Syndicate of Barcelona) representing all the quarry and gravel companies in the Province of Barcelona.
Bonaventura Pujals, Joan Solanes Balmes and Joan Ferreres Raventós were the association's founders. By now many of the Association's functions have changed, but one of the main functions that still remains on the statutes is that of representing the members before the Administration and institutions.
